Lyman wishes good health to Gonpei and his extended family. He notes that Mr. Kato, an officer of the Government Mining Bureau visited and said that the work of their old geological surveys was more appreciated in Japan than ever before. Lyman discusses coal surveys and oil drilling in Japan and the possibilities for mining in the Philippine Islands. He longs to visit Japan again and notes that Toku, who is living in Northampton and working in Mr. Bannister's bookstore, would like to return to Japan as well.
