Lyman believes it now necessary to sell the Northampton property in order to pay the interest on the coal tract mortgages. Smith College would like the property but would likely drive the price down. Since the mine is in good condition and anthracite trade prospects are encouraging he hopes to make an arrangement on the tract within a few months but realizes that coal prospects are too uncertain to continue risking the money Frank and his father loaned him. If the property cannot be sold, he is willing to deed the tract to Frank and his father as reimbursement. This draft marked "Not used."
