Letter from Benjamin Smith Lyman, Ichinosawa, Shinshū, Japan to Mr. Lesley
Description:
Lyman writes to thank Mr. Lesley for sending a packet of geographical survey reports, and criticizes the practice of antedating in published works. The faults and work practices of Mr. Munroe, Lyman's coworker and an acquaintance of Mr. Lesley's, are discussed in detail. Lyman provides descriptions of a number of maps produced in his work, including one full color print that he says is the "first case of such lithographing in Japan," and describes the extent of the coal located during his surveys for the Kaitakushi. He informs Mr. Lesley of the formation of a local organization: "The Society for the Pursuit of Geology," and requests the donation of Survey reports or other relevant materials to enrich the new Society's library. Lyman mentions a recent fall, and the symptoms of the resultant back injury.
