Interview with Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, civil rights activist, writer, and professor of Afro American Studies at UMass Amherst. Graduating from Howard University, work with SNCC and Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, ending at UMass after getting an invitation in 1965 from Sidney Kaplan and following an FBI interview threatening to deport him back to Jamaica if he was not a student -- found a congenial community including Sidney Kaplan, Leonard Baskin, Esther Terry, Sterling Brown -- change in direction of the movement while he was in graduate school -- Eric the Rat -- academic career, the movement, and writing -- cachet coming to the university through writing and movement.
