Interview with Lyle Craker, UMass Amherst formerly in Dept. of Plant and Soil Sciences and then in Stockbridge School. Educated at University of Wisconsin (class of 1963) and graduate school at University of Minnesota (1967), followed by military service doing research, then came to UMass in September 1969 working at the Experiment Station in Waltham on air pollution -- research and education around herbs and medicinal plants -- work building up Durfee Conservatory and campus -- changes in the University include a more rapid turnover in administrators, all of whom are interested in making a mark and moving on to a bigger place -- changing fortunes of College of Agriculture -- failure of UMass to develop a beneficial patent policy or deal coherently with research output of faculty -- struggles in gaining approval for marijuana research.
