Native of Brattleboro, Vt.; one of 13 women who did not fit in the Abbey (Abigail Adams House) and were assigned to live in Draper Hall -- class work and desire to get into Home Economics extension work -- memorable course in orienteering -- Mountain Day, which was discontinued during the war -- football games on the field at the current site of Haigis Mall -- skiing -- Edna Skinner, the head of women's programs at Mass State College -- women on campus: saw no discrimination in her time; restrictions on women students (not abandoned until the 1960s) -- impact of the war on the college and students, with sudden loss of nearly all the men students -- impact of her education on her subsequent life; married Joseph G. Gavin, Jr., who was instrumental in building the lunar lander for the moon landing -- work for students with disabilities at UMass -- role as member of the UMass Amherst Foundation.
