Un APPRENTI MARIN. Fichtre!... le ramage est plus difficile que je ne croyais... et pour me divertir j'aimerais encore mieux ramer des pois!...
Title (alt.):
THE NOVICE SAILOR. Devil... rowing is much more difficult than I thought! And to really enjoy myself I would rather stick peas. (Note: ramer = to row as well as to stick). Charivari
Description:
A man is rowing a little boat with a young boy on board. They are boating on the Seine. Between 1841 and 1863, Daumier had his apartment and his atelier at Quai d’Anjou, nr. 9 on the Ile St.-Louis in Paris. Around 1850 it became fashionable to navigate the Seine. There existed many private boats as well as commercial enterprises on the river.
