Five men with their camping gear sit together in a circle in the middle of a field in Lapland. One man, wearing traditional Lapp (Sami) clothing, looks directly at the camera. Fence posts mark an area just beyond them. Beyond the fence posts is a small sod house. A mountain is in the background. This is one of a series of five photographs taken on the same day of the same group of men. This photograph was taken when Joel M. Halpern accompanied Lutheran Pastor Lennart Wallmark (principal of the Sami folk high school in Jokkmokk from 1942 to 1972) to Lapland (Sapmi) in September of 1949. Since Halpern's camera was damaged, several shots were taken with Wallmark's camera. Wallmark sent a set of prints to Halpern back in the U.S.
