Philip Henry Smith of the Class of 1897, who became a Professor of Chemistry at the Hatch Experiment Station in the early 1900s, examines a bag of vegetable seeds. Each bag is labeled with a tag noting, among other things, a Date of Germination test (Jan. 1943). Professor Smith wears a lapel button bearing the initials A.R.P. Typewritten note accompanying photo reads: "These 28 lots of vegetable seeds collected by the seed control laboratory at Massachusetts State College will produce more than 120 tons of food for the Russian people during the coming summer. Philip H. Smith, chief of laboratory of the control service at the State College Experiment Station, is shown with the seeds before they were shipped to the Russian war relief offices in New York for transmission via convoy to Russian farmers." "Please return photo to Massachusetts State College, College News Service, Amherst - Massachusetts" stamped on back.
