Letter from Joel and Barbara Halpern to his parents during their time in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. This letter is in the form of an interview conducted by Halpern's translator, Aram Udol. Udol interviewed several different people in the first week of October. These interviews include the village leader of Xieng Men, who spoke about the village schools, books provided by USIS, and agricultural tools. He also interviewed the teacher of the school, the Meo (Hmong) who worked as coolies in the village, the tasseng of the district, and the bonze of the wat. Discussions include the end of Buddhist Lent, other festivals, and education.
