These field notes were included in letters from Joel M. Halpern to Carl and Nettie Halpern during the time spent in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. The first part of these are notes from Halpern's translator, Aram Udol, who interviewed several people, including a blind, clairvoyant Buddhist priest, an opium merchant, and other merchants. The various industries in Luang Prabang are described. A specific wedding is described in detail, as are wedding customs.
