Letter from Joel M. Halpern to Nettie and Carl Halpern

These pages are a lengthy multi-part letter from Joel Halpern to his parents. These letters were written in 1949 from various different places in Europe. The letters include descriptions of various cities throughout northern Europe. The letter begins with some description of Paris, France. Halpern describes a trip to the Opera National de Paris where he saw a Wagner's The Valkyrie from his Ring Cycle of Operas. These letters are focused on travels in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. COming soon after the end of World War II, Halpern does describe the cities of Bastogne, famous for its central location in the Ardennes forest and the Nazi offensive in late 1944, as well as Hamburg, Germany which was extensively bombed by Allied forces. The letters also include descriptions of a number of other towns and cities in the Netherlands such as Rotterdam, Bruge, Brussels and Amsterdam.
