Pierre-Joseph Redouté works from life to create Allium scorodoprasum, a precise portrayal of a sand leek. Printed in Les Liliacées volume seven c. 1813, Allium scorodoprasum was formerly known as Allium Arenarium before the plant was reclassified. Redouté's stipple engraving technique depicts the waxy sheen of the stalk with convincing texture, while adding realistic shading to all figures. To preserve an accurate scale, Redouté arranges the tall flower in two parts, divided at the stem. Nuanced details, such as the dessicated edges of the leaves, add naturalism to the impressive study.
