Allium subhirsutum, a stipple engraving printed by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, portrays the Hardly Hairy Leek. Originally captioned as Allium brachystemon, the print's title changed when its subject was reidentified. Allium subhirsutum began as part of the seventh volume of Les Liliacées, c. 1812. To emphasize the scientific purpose of the botanical study, Redouté includes miniature figures 1-3, depicting other aspects of the plant. His stipple technique enhances the waxy texture of the plant's leaves as well as providing authentic shading. Allium subhirsutum's simplicity of composition reinforces Redouté's commitment to realism.
