Pierre-Joseph Redouté methodically reproduces a plant known as the leek of Tartaria in Allium tataricum, his botanical study. Created c. 1804 for the second volume of Les Liliacées, Allium tataricum graces the viewer with a pleasingly balanced composition. To retain accurate sizing, Redouté trisects the stalk, placing the monochrome bulb off to the right of the two focal sections. Redouté captures light and form within the beautifully modeled leaves of the leek. Allium tataricum's scientific precision distinguishes the print as a product of the Enlightenment Era.
