Pierre-Joseph Redouté engraved Albuca maxima c. 1804 for his second installment of Les Liliacées. More commonly known as the giant lantern flower or its original name Albuca Cornuta, Albuca maxima intertwines multiple aspects of the plant in a dynamic composition. Its intricately curved stalks and budding flowers, all in unique poses, denote immense attention from Redouté as he studied the plant from life. Redouté's stipple engraving technique portrays the highlights and shadows of the lantern flower with as much sensitivity as a master watercolor painting could.
