More than 50 mounted photographs and another 30 or so smaller images, including several daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and cabinet cards, of George Clement Lord and his family, along with a few publications, notes, and ephemera. George Clement Lord (1823-1983) was born in Maine and moved to Newton in 1849, settling first on Waban Park, an area then being subdivided by William Jackson. In 1861, the family moved to a large estate that fronted on Waverley Avenue and included almost all the land bounded by Franklin, Park, and Sargent Streets. Three generations of the family are captured in these photographs: George Clement Lord and his wife, Marion (Ruthven) Lord; their children, Robert Waterston Lord, Marion Ruthven Lord, and Charles Edward Lord; and their grandchildren. Besides the formal views of people and houses, there are pictures of children at play in a sandbox and on sleds in the winter, with a description of riding down the hill all the way to Cabot Street. There are also pictures of a second Lord home at 93 Claremont Street, an 1890s Victorian that was converted to a Colonial Revival-style house about 1914. Finally, there are later views that show the changes to the landscape as lots were sold and Ruthven and Waterston Roads subdivided the original Waverley Avenue estate. In addition to photographs, the collection includes a program from the Sixteenth Annual Exhibition of the Newton High School (1876), a brochure advertising the Lord Electrical Wind Indicator, a copy of "Newton, Massachusetts: Suburban Living at Its Best"; and assorted notes. Also included are photos of donor Marilyn Read and the site at the dump in New Hampshire where the collection was discovered and rescued.
