Things that grip at his soul: President Hutchins at Univ. of Chicago asking for Germans to be treated legally: "Let us remember that vengeance is the Lord's. That, on top of the fact that last night, after Himmler had committed suicide, some prominent British authorities sat up till three n the morning arguing whether he ought to be given a Christian burial. The fantastic piousness with which all is forgiven is almost heartbreaking to the GI in Europe." Men in his command angered over leniency shown: "I wish I had the snaps of six Russians hung up by their heels with the trousers mostly ripped off with big bayonet rips in their bellies and their guts dangling down around their faces. I am having copies made and you will see them sometimes. And I am having extra prints made of one of my jeep drivers holding the rack halfway into the cremating ovens at Buchenwald where thousands were murdered and burned under some quotation twisted our of German poetry..." Angrier still with Germans in the street who steal and murder and never show shame or remorse; they never weep and hide what they feel.
