Letter from Shogo Nishiyama to Benjamin Smith Lyman
Description:
Nishiyama writes that commerce is not flourishing in Japan, that the values of gold and paper currency have shifted, and that the government is discarding public works projects (except railroads) in order to focus on enlarging the Army and Navy. He discusses the progress of the Geological Survey, and updates Lyman on the affairs of Inagaki, Shimada, Yamagiwa, Kada, Sugiuwa, Kuwada, Adachi, Mayeda, Yamauchi, Kō, and Asa. Nishiyama notes the development of the Poronoi coal mine, and of the nearby prison providing its labor. The included envelope has four lines of Japanese characters, and postmarks for Tokio, Yokohama, and San Francisco.
