Formal portrait of Albert Charles Smith, Professor of Botany. A renowned botanist, he served at various times as curator (Arnold Arboretum; Smithsonian Dept. of Botany), director (National Museum of History) and director of research of botany (University of Hawaii). He taught UMass from 1970-1976 until he retired and moved to Hawaii, serving the National Tropical Botanical Garden as editorial consultant. The Garden sponsored and published his five-volume work. He passed away in 1999. "Albert Smith" handwritten on back. "News Bureau, Whitmore Building, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass. 01002" stamped on back.
