Speaking on the thesis that "war is the supreme disaster. There is nothing worse," Du Bois examines the causes of war and prospects for peace in the world during the middle of the twentieth century. Du Bois warns that the United States has become the biggest warmonger in all of history, and is particularly concerned with the cultural effects of a widespread "hysterical fear of the Soviet Union and Communism." He touches on many issues including the suppression of the Progressive Party, the restriction of international travel for American peace activists, the transformation of the American educational system into training for war, the complacency of the American labor movement with a war-based economy, the necessity of replacing the military-industrial complex with a "program of public expenditure for the common good," and the pressing need to challenge American imperialism in the developing world.
