These field notes were included in letters from Joel M. Halpern to Carl and Nettie Halpern during the time spent in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. These are notes from Halpern's translator, Aram Udol, having interviewed a Thai Lu prisoner jailed in Luang Prabang for trading in opium. During the day, the prisoners are allowed to go out of the jail in order to work. This Lu speaks about his village in Sayaboury province in Muang Hongsa, and the way of life there.
