This photograph, taken on November 10, 1984, shows Olympic gold medalist Jeff Blatnick (class of 1979) standing next to a giant birthday candle at the exhibition gymnastics show celebrating Springfield College’s 100th Anniversary. He is wearing a medal, holding a plaque, and waving at the audience. Art Linkletter was the master of ceremonies, and the event was held at the Springfield Civic Center (now called the MassMutual Center).

Jeffrey C. Blatnick (July 26, 1957 – October 24, 2012) was an American super heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestler and sports commentator who graduated from Springfield College in 1979. He won two NCAA Division II heavyweight wrestling championships, as well as an Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling after battling back from cancer. Springfield College celebrated its 100th anniversary with a multitude of events throughout the academic year, starting with a display booth at the Big E on September 12, 1984 and ending with a centennial film festival on June 2, 1985.
