1st National Intercollegiate Gymnastics Competition (May 1969)
Description:
This silent film shows Springfield College gymnasts competing in the first National Intercollegiate Gymnastic Championships, hosted by the Division for Girls' and Women's Sports (DGWS) from May 7-9, 1969. Springfield College hosted the competition in the Memorial Field House on campus. They won the Division I Women's Gymnastics Championship in 1969, 1971, and 1972. In 1971, DGWS became the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), which governed collegiate women’s athletics and administered national championships. After the 1981-1982 academic year, the AIAW discontinued sponsorship of national championships and later was legally dissolved. The NCAA then assumed sole sanctioning authority of its member schools' women's sports programs.
