This photograph, taken on February 2, 1935, shows a YMCA men’s basketball team. The picture was taken in Mendoza during the Argentina Men’s Basketball Championships. The team was coached by Alberto Regina, who is wearing a suit and seated in the middle. The YMCA brought basketball to Argentina in 1912. The country competed in its first international game in 1921 and held its first clubs championship in 1936.This photograph is part of the Alberto Regina Scrapbook, but was folded over so that it could fit on the page and only part of the photograph was visible in the scrapbook - Physical Education, page thirty-six: http://cdm16122.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p15370coll2/id/4424

Alberto Regina was born on August 3, 1900 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He graduated from the College of the South American YMCA in 1924. Regina worked as the physical education director in Chile, the physical education director for the Argentina YMCA, and the technical advisor for the Argentine Federation of Sport. He also coached the Argentina water polo team in the 1928 Olympics. In 1930, Regina attended Springfield College for graduate study. He died from surgery complications on January 24, 1948.
