Tibbetts was born in Fort Yates, North Dakota, and his Sioux Indian name was Ta-sun-ke-Mani (Walking Horse). After graduation, Tibbetts served as a secretary at the Santee Agency YMCA (1898-1903) and the Cannon Ball YMCA in North Dakota (1904-1906). He also worked as the International Secretary to the YMCA Indian Associations in North and South Dakota. Tibbetts died on March 21, 1933. The YMCA facility pictured is part of the Indian Associations in North and South Dakota. In 1862, the Dakota People took part in a war that ended with one hundred and sixty Dakota warriors captured and sentenced to death. President Abraham Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but forty. While in jail, YMCA volunteers visited them, bringing clothing, bedding, English language lessons and Christianity. The Dakota men were so impressed with the volunteers’ compassion that they started the the Koskada Okadiciye, a Young Man's Association, when they were released in 1879. In 1885 they were recognized by the national YMCA movement and changed their name to Sioux Young Men's Christian Association. In 1970, the Sioux YMCAs voted to become a family association with a summer residential camp. They were incorporated in 1972 and became a member of the National Council of YMCAs in 1977. Today, the General Convention of Sioux YMCAs operates recreational and camping programs that serve youth and families spread out among isolated communities on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation, which is over 5,000 square miles.
Text on border reads, "Santee Tibbetts."
