After graduation, these men all went on to hold positions in YMCA facilities. The only identified man is Rudolf Horner (some records spell his name “Rudolph”), standing in the top row, third from the left. He was born in Switzerland and attended Springfield College, where he served as the steward of the Utopia Rugby Club and graduated in 1894. Two years after graduation, Horner served as General Secretary of the Association in San Francisco, California. In 1898, Horner became the traveling secretary of Germany and Switzerland, headquartered in Basle, Switzerland. In 1904, the World Committee selected Horner to serve as the traveling secretary for Portugal, headquartered in Oporto, Portugal. In 1909, Horner settled in Lisbon, Portugal, where he worked as the secretary of the local YMCA and became known for his sincerity, cordiality, and self-denial. During World War I, the World’s Committee called Rudolf Horner to work among prisoners of war. The Swiss Committee for the Association work in Portugal consented to place Horner at the disposal of the World’s Committee for the duration of the war. Thus, Horner moved to Geneva to establish WPA headquarters. His work there greatly increased the efficiency of International YMCA service to prisoners of war, and he directly oversaw the shipment of books to prisoners of war in Allied and Central Power prison camps. According to alumni records, Horner remained in Switzerland for the next ten years.
A duplicate (SC18727) exists; Text on border reads, "Rudolf Horner '94, Sec for Portugal."
