This hand-colored lantern slide shows two men who are either students or faculty at the International YMCA College (now Springfield College). They are demonstrating a stretching technique in the physiological laboratory.

Outfitted between January and February of 1900, the physiological laboratory occupied the room that was previously Dr. Gulick’s office, located in the northwest corner of the gymnasium’s second floor. This facility was divided into two sections: tables able to seat thirty-four students and a lecture space able to seat seventy-five students. When first built, the laboratory was equipped with ergographs, sphygmographs, momanometers, sphygnomanometers, and pneumographs. Faculty and students used the physiological laboratory to study exercise, particularly focusing on blood pressure and fatigue. As of 1930, this laboratory was still in use.
