This lantern slide, “A Dunk in Lake Massasoit,” was taken sometime between 1900 and 1920 on the campus of the International YMCA Training School. In 1912, the school changed its name to the International YMCA College, and today the institution is known as Springfield College. The image shows upperclassmen throwing a freshman into Lake Massasoit. Spectators watch from the shore and docks. It is unclear whether this is an initiation rite or punishment for failing to follow certain rules (e.g. wearing the green beanies at all times, not stepping on the Senior Walk, etc.).
