- Description:
-
This lantern slight shows the International YMCA Training School’s (now known as Springfield College) 1907 varsity football team. The members shown are [standing row, L to R] Ernest Frederick Moller (in bow tie; class of 1910), George Edward Stock (class of 1909), unidentified student, Joseph Howard McCulloch (class of 1910), Harry Alexander Cook (class of 1908), George Adey Crispin (class of 1908), [seated in chairs] William N. Howard (class of 1911), James Huff McCurdy (professor and coach, class of 1890), Russell Sheldon Flower (class of 1908 and team manager), Frederick Louis Honhart (class of 1908 and team captain), Harry Ogden McGuire (class of 1908), Thomas Edward Jones (class of 1908), [seated on floor] James Wheeler Bailey (class of 1908), Chester E. Briggs (class of 1909), and an unidentified student. The emblem on the team sweaters was as the official school emblem until 1912, when the school became the International YMCA College. In 1907, the United States college football season saw an increased use of the forward pass, which had been legalized the year before. Football remained a dangerous game, despite the "debrutalization" reforms, and an unprecedented eleven players were killed and ninety-eight others were seriously injured. The 1907 record was 2-4-2.
