- Springfield College Exhibition Team Poster (February 8, 1941)
- Description:
-
This poster advertises the Springfield College Exhibition Team’s show at the Glassboro State Teachers College on Saturday, February 8, 1941. The poster proclaims that tickets were 50 cents. Glassboro State Teachers College is now Rowan University. Created by Springfield College gymnastics coach Leslie J. Judd (Class of 1920), the Tableaux is a scene performed by costumed actors who remain silent and motionless as if in a picture. As performed by Springfield College Gymnasts, participants in the Tableaux cover their bodies in either silver or bronze make-up. “Aspiration” and “Co-operation” are Springfield College’s most well-known Tableaux performances, and they inspire all ages to strive to higher levels of achievement in body, mind and spirit. Other well-known performances include “The Plungers,” “Track & Field,” “The Machine Age,” “Indian Clubs,” and “Sabre Drill.”

Leslie Judd was head coach at Springfield College, and his work with their gymnastics and exhibition team is credited as part of the momentum behind the revitalization in gymnastic programs in the United States. All seventeen of the students Judd trained while at Springfield College went on to coach at the collegiate level. He was primary author of the 1969 book “Exhibition Gymnastics,” More than one hundred and fifteen years later, Springfield College remains a leader in competitive and exhibition gymnastics. In 1921, Leslie Judd became the first full-time gymnastics coach and went on to create the world-famous “statuary of youths” that was later renamed “tableaux.” In 1939, Life Magazine featured the tableaux in its January issue, while International Gymnast magazine profiled it in the December 2004 issue.
