Phil received Harry's last letter and is surprised to hear that Helen has gotten engaged to Jay Kendrick. Although it's her business, he thinks that it is a foolish choice, since the possibility is there that she could be widowed or else "have a husband on her hands who is helpless." He remarks that Helen has gone further along in the area of marriage than he has, and maybe further than he ever will. He's never thought very seriously of marriage, and war hasn't changed that. He had his first chance to do some carpentry work, and although it was work he hadn't done before he did well enough that they asked him to come back. He was making shelves and chests for the hospital and all he had were a hammer and a saw.
