Phil received Harry's letter, as well as two from Art and Helen, all informing him that Harry passed his examination. Phil doesn't think service will hurt Phil, but he doesn't know how Millard and Aunt Annie are going to make ends meet without him and he hopes Harry can convince Annie to use Phil's allotment. He was surprised to hear of Uncle George's death, and thinks nothing can be done to comfort Aunt Sarah. Harry's letter indicates Buster has patched up his trouble with Mrs. Hicks, and Phil thinks that Harry should sell the horses, although he doesn't like the thought of it.
