As today is mother's day and Phil is unable to write to his own mother, he is writing to Annie, who has done her best to be a mother to him since and succeeded so well. Phil was glad to receive the photos of everyone from Harry, but would have been happier if Annie had not looked so sad. He realizes that war is a serious business but the war needs the support of those at home to be won. He's glad his allotment was received and hopes that Annie will spend it. Millard graduates in June although it seems that he just started. He wants to send him a gift but there aren't many options here. He hasn't heard from Aunt Sarah since George died, but he has finally heard from Leafy as well as Mrs. Hicks.
