<mods:abstract>Circular letter to Harold and family. Since last writing, has been all through the area east of Leipzig, Weimar, etc., and taken a couple more trips through Buchenwald, "where I caught a case of the fleas and have been itching since." Saw skins of prisoners taken by Frau Koch from prisoners for tattoos she liked. Another story from Buchenwald: an Italian Princess Fananda [i.e. Mafalda of Savoy] became a prostitute in order to great medical treatment. "The stories that come out of the place are fantastic. And they continue so." The camp is now becoming a camp for Polish refugees who do not wish to return to Poland; they are afraid of the Russians. Joe hopes the Russians will "step into the huge breach of mistrust and mend it with every means at her disposal. And prove by her conduct that she may be relied upon to maintain the standards she has proclaimed for freedom and human decency. I know from what I have seen of Russian occupational methods that they are making special efforts to win the good will of the masses of DPs and the German respect for the ability in government and diplomacy." Believes the Russians wish to establish good ties with the US, despite their untactful diplomacy. "The Germans in this area are frightened at the thought of Russian occupation..." Crowds of refugees streaming west now include German citizens fleeing the rumored Russian takeover. "Germany is a confusing melting pot. There are the Germans who are emerging after years of terror from Germany..."</mods:abstract>
