<mods:abstract>This is an eight page report written by Springfield College professor Charles J. Smith about the Beijing Institute of Physical Education (now Beijing Sport University). It is titled "The Beijing Institute of Physical Education: A Brief Report by Charles J. Smith. It is believed to have been written in 1983, shortly after his visit there. The report talks about his experience there as a Visiting Lecturer. In addition, it describes the facilities, the students, their faculty, and the daily routine and educational schedules.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Beijing Sport University was organized and established as the Central Institute of Physical Education (sport) in 1953 with the help of Professor Xu Yingchao, Springfield College graduate of the class 1938. The name of the university changed to Peking (Beijing) Institute of Physical Culture (physical education) in 1956 and renamed Beijing Sports University in 1993. The first agreement signed by Springfield College and the Beijing Sport University was on September 25, 1981, which provided pathways for collaboration and exchange of faculty and students. Charles J. Smith served as the director of the International Academy at Springfield College, later renamed to the International English Language Institute at the College, from 1986-1999. Smith was instrumental in strengthening international relationships between the College and countries in Asia, including China, Japan, and Taiwan. Following his retirement in 1999, Smith continued to build international partnerships between the College and students in the Far East. Not only did Smith have an impact on international relations with the College, but he also served as a Springfield College swimming coach for 23 years from 1966 through 1989. During his long-standing tenure with the swimming program, he instructed both the men’s and women’s teams on different occasions, as well as serving as diving coach for a period of time starting in 1967. From 1986-1989, Smith performed double duty leading the swimming programs and also directing the International Academy.</mods:note>
