The photograph was used in the Westerly Sun, the newspaper for Westerly Rhode Island on Dec. 10, 1981 with the caption "Springfield Gymnast - Joan Carey of Westerly, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Carey of 17 State St., will be competing with the Springfield College women's varsity gymnastics team in the NCAA Division II championships. Springfield will host the event for the first time at the new $5.3 million Physical Education Complex. Miss. Carey is a physical education major. The Maroons, coached by Cheryl Raymond, will try to improve on last year's sixth place finish in the Easterns. The 6-5 meet record a year ago included wins over Temple, Rutgers, UConn, Southern Connecticut, Hofstra and East Stroudsburg."

Joan A. Carey was a Springfield College Gymnast and Graduate (Class of 1983). In 1983 she was the captain of the women's gymnastics team and received the Scholar-Athlete award presented by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was one of Springfield's best gymnasts on the balance beam and floor exercise.
