Archie Allen coached baseball at Springfield College from 1948 to 1978. He is one of the best-known coaches in the college's history and was selected to the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame’s first class in 1972. Archie was the head coach for three of the four times that the school’s baseball team reached the College World Series. He coached the US Pan American team, was president of the College Baseball Coaches Association, and was commissioner of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Allen also published four books on baseball strategy. Diane Potter coached the women's softball team for an amazing 21 years. She was Springfield College’s first gymnastics and softball coach. She created the softball program from the bottom up and was considered to be a leading pioneer for softball in the New England area. An extramural squad was formed by Potter in the 1963-1964 academic school year and it wasn't until the 1966-1967 season that the squad was recognized by Springfield College. Interestingly enough, Coach Potter led the 1968 squad through the 1970 squad to a 32-0 win streak! She coached the softball team for twenty-one years (1965-1975, 1977-1985), compiling a 227-123 record that includes four undefeated seasons. The Softball filed was recognized and dedicated to Coach Diane Potter and named it Potter Field. In 1989, she became the second woman inducted into the Springfield College Athletics Hall of Fame, and during that academic year, she served as the Springfield Distinguished Professor of Humanics.
