During the early 1970s there was no women's track team at Springfield College, although a number of girls were competing individually and some had even competed in various national Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) track meets. Recognizing the need, the herokee Track Club was created during the 1972-1973 school. The club participated in regular track meets just like an intercollegiate team, but received no official school sanction until the he women’s varsity track and field team was established in the 1976-1977 school year.
