<mods:abstract>A typed letter from Dr. Laurence Locke Doggett to Mr. Galen M. Fisher, dated March 6 1908.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Dr. Doggett was president of the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College), and Mr. Fisher was the secretary of the Japanese YMCA Union. In the letter Dr. Doggett encloses a blank application for Mr. Miyata, and offers Mr. Miyata a full scholarship consisting of both room rent and tuition, pending an endorsement by Mr. Fisher. Mr. Miyata, originally from Nagasaki, Japan, was born in 1880, and applied and was accepted to the secretarial program of the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College), graduating in 1911. Mr. Miyata roomed with Yosokichi Morise (Class of 1909), and was well known for his tennis abilities being part of the Tennis Varsity Team, “winning two of the five tournaments in which competed” (The Massasoit, 1911). Doggett was Springfield College's fourth president. He was also the first full-time president and served in the position from 1896-1936. Under Doggett's leadership Springfield College expanded its student body from 50 to 500 and its faculty from 8 to 40. Doggett also oversaw the building of a new gymnasium, library, swimming pool and athletic at the College. Doggett was also instrumental in developing and implementing the College's Humanics philosophy which still guides the college to this day. He retired in 1936 and remains Springfield College's longest tenured president. Dr. Laurence L. Doggett died in 1957 at the age of 92.</mods:note>
