Item Information

Title:
Natural Science Division Bulletin - Teaching Majors (1934-1935)
Description:
This Special Bulletin from the Natural Science Division was published in the 1934-1935 academic year by the International YMCA College, now Springfield College. This bulletin (on its long version format) is the first to describe the new plan for the undergraduate and graduate studies, organized then in four divisions: The Arts and Science Division, the Natural Science Division, the Social Science Division, and the graduate division, and outlining all its teaching majors. According to the college yearbook, the Massasoit (1935), “by 1930 (…) the influx of numerous progressive young professors marks the new era of growth for Springfield…(where it) finally escaped the narrow and somewhat stagnant traces of the nineties and awoke to a redefinition of courses and curricula”. First, the bulletin lists the members of College faculty, and all the natural science division majors. Then it describes the leadership of the college on the physical education field, the placement examinations, the type of men that are desired as students at the school (including “a Christian character”), and the freshman week. Afterwards, it describes graduation and curriculum requirements of each major offered: Teaching Major in Physical and Health Education, Teaching Major in Physical and Biological Science, and Premedical course requirements. Subsequently, the bulletin describes the location and the equipment available to students, the expenses, and a course by course description of the offered curriculum. The bulletin closes with an overview of the summer school and the academic year calendar.
