<mods:abstract>This is a short film of experiments conducted by Dr. Peter V. Karpovich. The film shows a couple of different activities, including a man with a rifle and a man stretching. The film starts out with a man with a rifle. He is standing and then kneels down and points with the gun. It then switches over to a man standing with his back to the camera and stretching his arms above his head. There is a ruler strapped to his back, running down the back of his legs. His jacket has a marker on it that slides up and down the ruler as he stretches. The film then goes back to the first man who performs a series of activities, including some arm movements without the rifle. The film is not dated, though these experiments may have been conducted when Dr. Karpovich served as the Chief of the Laboratory of Physical Fitness at the School of Aviation Medicine, Army Air Force. He held this position from 1941-1945. The reel does have tape on the side that says "Clothing reel #3" and perhaps AFA, though the letters are hard to read. The film is a digital copy of the original 16mm black and white silent film.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Peter V. Karpovich (1896-1975) was born in Russia and trained as a medical doctor at the State Military Academy of Medicine in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), Russia in 1919. Under increasing political and professional turmoil, he fled to Latvia in 1922. In Latvia, Karpovich worked at the Riga YMCA. In 1925, he traveled to the United States to research at Springfield College. While there, he enrolled as a special advanced student and earned a master’s degree in physical education. In 1927, while completing his studies, he became a professor of physiology at the college. In the late 1940s, he met and married his second wife, Josephine Rathbone, an acclaimed scholar of physical education and relaxation. From 1961 to 1969, he served as the director of the physiology research laboratory at Springfield College, where he published several seminal books. Karpovich was a founding member of the American College of Sports Medicine and a consultant to many government, private and educational organizations. He remains an internationally recognized pioneer in physical education.</mods:note>
<mods:note>Filrm reel is a black tin film case; There is tape on the case that says, "Clothing Reel # 3" and"D4-17"; There is tape on the side of the reel that says "Clothing Reel #3" and maybe "AFA" - unfortunately the writing is not clear; The film is shown at 24 frames per second; The original reel was damaged by heat and was crinkled;</mods:note>
