In 1926, Stepping Up Day replaced Decapitation Day, which marked the day freshman were allowed to remove their green beanies and pass over Senior Walk. Stepping Up Day celebrates the student body reaching their next class year (or graduating), and during this event each class president gives a traditional symbolic object to the class president below him. The Alumni association invites the senior class to attach their class ribbon to the alumni key, the senior class gives the junior class the Mortar Board (representing their achievement), the junior class gives the sophomore class a Plaque (representing their service projects), and the sophomore class gives the freshman class a Peace Pipe (representing the end of class rivalry and the pledge of future friendship). Traditionally, freshmen experienced a series of initiations at Springfield College. These activities, including Cage-Ball and Rope Pull, occurred between the freshman and sophomore classes and created the traditional Springfield College freshman-sophomore rivalry. The ceremonies end with the singing of the Alma Mater. The day typically comes towards the end of the spring semester.
