Volume 9 Number 4 of The Amherst College Magazine. The magazine was a student-run literary journal that ran from October 1853-June 1862. It was published on a monthly basis during the academic terms, with some exceptions. Since the inception of the magazine, there were numerous title changes: The Amherst Collegiate Magazine (October 1853-August 1857); The Ichnolite (October 1857-July 1861); and The Amherst College Magazine (September 1861-June 1862). Throughout its run, the magazine remained a literary publication with entries in a variety of forms including essays, reviews, literary sketches, short stories, letters, poetry, editorials, and notices of current college-related events. Translations, musical scores, play scripts, drawings, and humorous entries were also occasionally included in issues. The editors of this issue of The Amherst College Magazine were Charles Humphreys Sweetser, Truman Tomson, George Gardner Phipps, and William Binney.
