Description:
Volume 1 Number 1 of The Amherst Collegiate Magazine. The magazine was a student-run literary journal that ran from October 1853-June 1862. It was published on a monthly basis during the academic terms, with some exceptions. Since the inception of the magazine, there were numerous title changes: The Amherst Collegiate Magazine (October 1853-August 1857); The Ichnolite (October 1857-July 1861); and The Amherst College Magazine (September 1861-June 1862). Throughout its run, the magazine remained a literary publication with entries in a variety of forms including essays, reviews, literary sketches, short stories, letters, poetry, editorials, and notices of current college-related events. Translations, musical scores, play scripts, drawings, and humorous entries were also occasionally included in issues. The editors of Volume 1 of The Amherst Collegiate Magazine were Edward Crane, Henry V. Emmons, William W. Fowler, John C. Kimball, and George Partridge. This volume also includes handwritten notes presumably written by John C. Kimball. The index to Volume 1 is included in this issue.
