The Essex Register February 16, 1824 issue which includes an article titled "Amherst College." The article provides the January 22, 1824 speech of Samuel Hubbard in the Senate on the report of a Committee in favor of granting charter to Amherst College. Hubbard references the petition requesting charter made by the Trustees of Amherst Academy, the petition made by the subscribers to the Charity Fund, and the memorial made by the Trustees of Williams College. He discusses the Collegiate Institution and Williams College and mentions Harvard. Hubbard argues in favor of granting charter. Another article titled "Amherst Institution" provides the distribution of votes on the topic of the charter.
Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.
