The letter is signed by Zephaniah Swift Moore and is addressed to Reverend Zenas L. Leonard of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The letter details the founding of the Collegiate Institution and describes the Charity Fund, including the names of the Overseers of this Fund. It also discusses the current state of the Institution and a new subscription for the Institution. Below the signature of Moore are the terms of subscription, labeled "Form of Subscription" and dated June 28, 1822. The fund discussed in this letter and for which there is a form for subscription was commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription.
Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.
