<mods:abstract>C.P. Grosvenor (Cyrus Pitt Grosvenor) letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Grosvenor discusses his recent time in New York and now Charleston, South Carolina attempting to obtain money, presumably for the Collegiate Institution in Amherst. He discusses his journey, his difficulties in securing donations, and his interactions with local clergy such as Reverend Dr. Palmer. Grosvenor states that his journey may not wholly be in vain as much interest has been excited in favor of Amherst among men who wish to send their sons to the North for education. He goes on to discuss particular young men who may come to Amherst to study. He also states that almost every gentlemen with whom he discusses the subject has expressed astonishment that the Massachusetts legislature has not yet granted a charter to the Institution. Grosvenor notes that should Moore need to communicate with him, he can find him in Baltimore, though first he is leaving for Savannah in the morning. He closes with kind regards for several named individuals in Amherst.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.</mods:note>
