Hitchcock discusses various types of laws governing the universe, including mechanical laws, chemical laws, and organic laws, and intellectual laws, stressing that change is at the center of them all. He then goes on to discuss the history of species on Earth and the evidence of change that can be seen in fossil specimens from different "systems of life." He discusses how many times the species on Earth have changed significantly, how these changes were effected, and argues that these changes can be considered miracles. He stresses that in spite of nature's constancy, God can cause any change through special providence and without miracles.
