Edward Hitchcock sermon no. 161, "Examination of the Scriptures," 1823 April
Description:
Edward Hitchcock's sermon on reading and understanding the Bible, based on John 5:39 (Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.). Hitchcock noted on the first page the dates and places where he had delivered this sermon between 1823 and 1838 as well as Bible chapters and hymns related to the sermon. Hitchcock noted that the Bible is the only book which God has given to man - infallible and containing the only plan for salvation and everlasting glory - yet too many remain ignorant of its contents. He enumerated a list of rules to be used to guide a search of the scriptures. He also asserted that the common translation then in use was wonderfully correct and probably could not be improved. To emphasize this declaration, Hitchcock included about a half a page of quotations from someone he identified as one of the most able and learned biblical scholars (i.e., Moses Stuart).
